JAMB subject combinations, explained
How to pick the right four UTME subjects for your course, step by step, and where to confirm the official requirements.
How JAMB subject combinations work
For the UTME you write four subjects. Use of English is compulsory for everyone. The other three must match the requirements of the course you want to study. If your combination does not match, you may not be considered for that course, even with a high score.
The official source for subject requirements is the JAMB brochure (available through JAMB's official channels). Requirements can differ from one institution to another for the same course, so always check the entry for your exact course and your chosen school.
How to choose your subjects in 5 steps
- Decide on your course and two or three schools you'd like to attend.
- Open the JAMB brochure and find the UTME requirements for that course in each school.
- Note the subjects listed as required, and any options (for example, “any one of”).
- Check that your O'level (WAEC/NECO) results include the subjects and credits the course needs.
- Pick the three subjects that satisfy every school on your list, then register.
Common patterns by course area
These are general patterns only, to help you understand how combinations usually look. They are not official requirements. Confirm your exact course in the JAMB brochure before registering.
| Course area | Subjects that are commonly required (plus Use of English) |
|---|---|
| Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and other health sciences | Usually Biology, Chemistry and Physics |
| Engineering | Usually Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry |
| Pure and applied sciences | Usually Mathematics and/or sciences related to the course |
| Accounting, Economics, Business | Usually Mathematics, Economics and one other relevant subject |
| Law | Usually JAMB novel plus arts or social science subjects |
| Arts and humanities | Usually JAMB novel and subjects related to the course |
Don't forget O'level requirements
Most courses also require at least five O'level credit passes, usually including English Language and Mathematics, in subjects related to the course. Your UTME subjects should line up with those O'level credits. Practise for them with WAEC and NECO past questions.
